Losartan is a medicine people often take for years rather than for a short episode of illness, which makes the small details around strength, monitoring and package size more important than they may first appear. It belongs to the angiotensin II receptor blocker, or ARB, group and lowers blood pressure by reducing the effect of angiotensin II on blood vessels and several other parts of the cardiovascular system.

Its role extends beyond the number shown on a blood-pressure monitor. Losartan can also be used in selected patients when kidney protection or cardiovascular risk is part of the treatment plan, although the reason for prescribing it changes what should be monitored over time.

What Is Losartan Used For?

Losartan is most closely associated with hypertension, but the medicine is used in several situations where blocking the renin-angiotensin system can provide a clinical benefit. Treatment is normally adjusted according to blood pressure, kidney function, potassium levels and the condition being treated rather than according to symptoms alone.

  • High blood pressure. Losartan lowers vascular resistance and is widely used as a long-term antihypertensive medicine.
  • Kidney protection in selected patients with type 2 diabetes. Losartan has an established role in hypertensive patients with diabetic nephropathy and proteinuria.
  • Cardiovascular risk reduction in selected hypertension patients. It can be used in certain people with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy as part of a strategy to reduce cardiovascular risk.
  • Other cardiovascular treatment plans. Depending on the patient and local prescribing practice, an ARB may also become part of broader treatment when another renin-angiotensin medicine is unsuitable.

Losartan Has a Wide Price Range in Mexico

Losartan is one of those medicines where a Mexican pharmacy search can return several very different prices without changing the active ingredient or strength. Farmacias Benavides currently lists three 50 mg products in 30-unit packages: its own pharmacy-label losartan for MXN $178, Lodestar from Laboratorios Liomont for MXN $724, and Cozaar from Organon for MXN $1,568.

Product Manufacturer / Line Strength Quantity Online Price Approx. Cost per Tablet
Farmacias Benavides Losartan Benavides private-label line 50 mg 30 tablets MXN $178 MXN $5.93
Lodestar Laboratorios Liomont 50 mg 30 tablets MXN $724 MXN $24.13
Cozaar Organon 50 mg 30 tablets MXN $1,568 MXN $52.27

All three listings identify losartan as the active ingredient and all three contain 30 units at 50 mg, yet the Cozaar box is about 8.8 times the price of the Benavides product. Lodestar sits between them and gives another common Mexican-market situation: a branded product from an established local laboratory priced well above a pharmacy-label generic but far below the original brand.

Package size adds another layer when the search moves to a different chain. Farmacias del Ahorro currently sells its own losartan 50 mg in a 60-tablet package for MXN $221, while its loyalty catalog also includes 15-, 60- and 90-tablet presentations of the same strength. Several of these products are included in the chain’s current 3+1 Monedero del Ahorro promotion, so a patient buying the medicine continuously can encounter a very different effective cost from someone purchasing a single 30-tablet box elsewhere.

  • Benavides: 50 mg / 30 tablets can range from a low-cost private-label product to Lodestar and Cozaar.
  • Farmacias del Ahorro: the same 50 mg strength appears in several larger package quantities.
  • Loyalty promotions: recurring-purchase programs can change the long-term cost even when the shelf price stays the same.

For losartan, the useful comparison is therefore very specific: the same strength, the same number of tablets and the same number of active ingredients. A losartan/hydrochlorothiazide product belongs in a separate group, while a 60- or 90-tablet box should be compared by treatment quantity instead of by the box price alone.

Losartan Alone and Losartan/Hydrochlorothiazide Are Different Medicines

This is one of the easiest mistakes to make when comparing Mexican product pages. A listing that begins with “Losartan 50 mg” may continue with “Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg,” which turns it into a two-drug antihypertensive combination. That product does not match a prescription for losartan 50 mg alone.

Example Active Ingredients What Changes
Losartan 50 mg Losartan Single ARB treatment.
Losartan 50 mg / HCTZ 12.5 mg Losartan + hydrochlorothiazide Adds a thiazide diuretic and changes electrolyte and fluid effects.
Losartan 100 mg / HCTZ 25 mg Losartan + hydrochlorothiazide Contains higher amounts of both components and is a separate strength.

Safety Information

Kidney function and potassium. Losartan acts on the renin-angiotensin system, so changes in kidney function and blood potassium can occur after treatment begins or after the dose is increased. Many patients use the medicine for years without a problem, but monitoring becomes more relevant in people with chronic kidney disease, heart failure, diabetes, dehydration or another condition that already places additional stress on the kidneys.

Blood tests may include serum creatinine, estimated kidney function and potassium. A modest change in kidney measurements can sometimes occur after an ARB is started, while a larger or progressive change needs medical review. Potassium can also rise, particularly when losartan is combined with potassium supplements, potassium-containing salt substitutes or medicines that reduce potassium excretion.

Low blood pressure and dehydration. Dizziness, weakness or symptomatic hypotension is more likely when circulating fluid volume is already reduced. Vomiting, prolonged diarrhea, heavy sweating, very low fluid intake or intensive diuretic treatment can all make this more noticeable. A patient who normally tolerates losartan well can therefore react differently during an acute illness that causes significant fluid loss.

Persistent dizziness, fainting or unusually low blood-pressure readings should be discussed with the prescriber rather than managed by repeatedly skipping and restarting tablets without a plan.

Other medicines can change the risk profile. NSAIDs such as ibuprofen or naproxen can reduce the blood-pressure effect of losartan and, in susceptible patients, increase the chance of kidney problems when used together, especially during dehydration. Potassium-sparing diuretics such as spironolactone, eplerenone or amiloride can increase potassium further, while potassium supplements and some salt substitutes can do the same.

  • NSAIDs: can affect blood-pressure control and kidney function, particularly with frequent use.
  • Potassium supplements: can contribute to hyperkalemia when added to losartan.
  • Potassium-sparing diuretics: may require closer laboratory monitoring when used in the same treatment plan.
  • Lithium: blood lithium concentrations can increase when lithium is used with medicines acting on the renin-angiotensin system, so monitoring may be required.
  • Other renin-angiotensin medicines: combining an ARB with certain ACE inhibitors or aliskiren can increase the risk of low blood pressure, high potassium and impaired kidney function in some patients.

Pregnancy. Losartan should not be used during pregnancy because medicines acting directly on the renin-angiotensin system can cause serious fetal harm, particularly as pregnancy progresses. Anyone who becomes pregnant while taking losartan should contact the prescriber promptly so treatment can be changed to an appropriate alternative.

This is also something to discuss before conception rather than waiting for a positive pregnancy test when pregnancy is being planned. A different blood-pressure medicine can usually be selected in advance when continued treatment is required.

Angioedema and allergic reactions. Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat is uncommon but requires urgent medical attention, especially when it interferes with breathing or swallowing. A previous history of angioedema should be mentioned before losartan is started.

Monitoring during long-term treatment. Losartan usually becomes part of a continuing blood-pressure or kidney-protection plan, so follow-up tends to focus on trends rather than how the medicine feels on a particular day. Blood-pressure readings, kidney function, potassium and changes in the rest of the medication list give the prescriber a much better picture of whether the current dose remains appropriate.
