Flomax is one of the better-known names for tamsulosin, a medicine used mainly when an enlarged prostate begins to interfere with normal urination. It belongs to the alpha-1 blocker group and works by relaxing smooth muscle around the prostate and the bladder outlet, which can make it easier to start urinating and improve the flow of urine without actually shrinking the prostate itself.
This distinction is important because tamsulosin can improve symptoms relatively quickly while the underlying prostate enlargement may still remain. Men who continue to have worsening urinary difficulty, blood in the urine, repeated infections, pain or an inability to urinate need medical evaluation instead of simply assuming that a stronger urinary medicine is required.

What Is Flomax Used For?
Flomax and generic tamsulosin are primarily used for lower urinary tract symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia, usually shortened to BPH. The medicine does not work as a general treatment for every urinary problem, which is why the reason behind the symptoms still matters before treatment begins.
- Difficulty starting urination. Relaxing smooth muscle around the prostate and bladder outlet can reduce some of the resistance that makes it difficult to begin passing urine.
- Weak or interrupted urine flow. Tamsulosin can improve urinary flow in men whose symptoms are related to BPH.
- Frequent or urgent urination. Some patients notice improvement in the need to urinate repeatedly during the day or night as obstruction-related symptoms improve.
- Incomplete emptying symptoms. Treatment can reduce the sensation that the bladder has not emptied completely, although persistent retention requires medical assessment.
Tamsulosin Manufacturers and Brands in Mexico
Flomax is still the name many U.S. patients recognize first, but in Mexico the same treatment is spread across a much wider group of tamsulosin products from different laboratories. A search limited to the Flomax name can therefore miss several established alternatives, most commonly built around tamsulosin 0.4 mg in a prolonged-release capsule.
Asoflon is one of the more familiar Mexican-market options and is manufactured by Asofarma de México. It is sold as tamsulosin 0.4 mg in a 30-capsule prolonged-release presentation, which places it very close to the type of product many patients expect when they begin by searching for Flomax.
Uprosol is another 0.4 mg product sold in 30-capsule packages, with current Farmacias Benavides listings identifying Aspen Labs as the laboratory. Large chains also carry their own lower-priced tamsulosin lines, including Farmacias Benavides products in 20-capsule packages, so the Mexican market gives customers a choice between branded products and pharmacy-label versions even when the active ingredient and strength remain the same.
| Product | Laboratory / Brand | Current Mexican Presentation |
|---|---|---|
| Asoflon | Asofarma de México | Tamsulosin 0.4 mg, 30 prolonged-release capsules |
| Uprosol | Aspen Labs | Tamsulosin 0.4 mg, 30 capsules |
| Farmacias Benavides | Pharmacy private-label line | Tamsulosin 0.4 mg, 20 capsules |
Asofarma de México also produces Asoflon-Duo, which combines dutasteride 0.5 mg with tamsulosin 0.4 mg in one product. It is used in BPH treatment when the prescription includes both medicines instead of tamsulosin alone.
Laboratorios Silanes has another combination product called Aditams, containing tamsulosin 0.4 mg together with tadalafil 5 mg. Mexican pharmacy listings can place products like Asoflon-Duo and Aditams next to regular tamsulosin, even though the formulas contain additional active ingredients.
For this reason, a Flomax search in Mexico should include the complete product name and composition, not only the words “tamsulosin 0.4 mg.” The same strength can appear in a single-ingredient capsule or inside a combination product with dutasteride or tadalafil.
Combination Products Need Extra Attention
Tamsulosin also appears in Mexican fixed-dose combinations, and these products should be treated as separate medicines rather than as another version of ordinary Flomax. Current pharmacy catalogs include combinations of dutasteride 0.5 mg with tamsulosin 0.4 mg, as well as a product combining tamsulosin 0.4 mg with tadalafil 5 mg.
| Product Type | What It Contains | Why the Difference Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Tamsulosin alone | Tamsulosin 0.4 mg | Targets urinary symptoms through alpha-1 blockade. |
| Dutasteride + tamsulosin | 0.5 mg / 0.4 mg | Adds a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor that affects prostate enlargement over time. |
| Tadalafil + tamsulosin | 5 mg / 0.4 mg | Adds a PDE5 inhibitor and changes both the treatment purpose and interaction profile. |
Safety Information
Dizziness and low blood pressure. Tamsulosin can cause dizziness, light-headedness or occasionally fainting, particularly when treatment is started, restarted after an interruption or combined with other medicines that lower blood pressure. Getting up slowly from a bed or chair can be particularly important during this period.
Sexual side effects. Changes in ejaculation are a recognized effect of tamsulosin and can occur even when the medicine is otherwise working well for urinary symptoms.
Interactions. Other alpha blockers, certain blood-pressure medicines, strong CYP3A4 inhibitors and medicines used for erectile dysfunction can increase the likelihood of hypotension or change tamsulosin exposure. A prescriber should know about the complete medication list before these combinations are used.
An Important Note for Eye Surgery
Tamsulosin has a safety consideration that patients may not immediately connect with a prostate medicine. Current or previous use has been associated with intraoperative floppy iris syndrome during cataract and some glaucoma surgery, which can change how the ophthalmic surgeon plans the procedure.
Anyone preparing for eye surgery should tell the ophthalmologist about current or previous tamsulosin use even if the medicine was stopped some time ago. Stopping it independently just before surgery does not necessarily remove the issue and can also allow urinary symptoms to return.
Flomax Does Not Shrink the Prostate
Tamsulosin can make urination easier without reducing the size of the prostate itself. It relaxes smooth muscle in the prostate and around the bladder outlet, which lowers resistance to urine flow and can improve symptoms such as hesitancy, weak stream, urgency and frequent nighttime urination. Because this effect comes from changing muscle tone, some men begin to notice symptom relief relatively early in treatment even though the enlarged prostate remains essentially the same size.
Finasteride and dutasteride work very differently. These medicines inhibit 5-alpha-reductase and lower the formation of dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, a hormone involved in prostate growth. In men with an enlarged prostate, treatment can gradually reduce prostate volume and lower the likelihood of BPH progression, acute urinary retention and the eventual need for prostate surgery. The process is slow and usually takes months, which is why these drugs are used for a different purpose than the faster symptom relief associated with an alpha blocker such as tamsulosin.
This distinction becomes particularly relevant when urinary symptoms are being controlled but the prostate remains substantially enlarged. A patient may feel better on Flomax while still having an underlying risk of progression, especially when prostate volume is high or symptoms have already become more advanced.
Some treatment plans therefore use both approaches at the same time: tamsulosin to improve urine flow and a medicine such as finasteride or dutasteride to address prostate enlargement over the longer term. Combination treatment also brings a different side-effect profile, including possible sexual effects from 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors and dizziness or low blood pressure from the alpha blocker, so the choice depends on prostate size, symptom severity, progression risk, other medicines and how treatment is tolerated over time.
